Capital One Mascot Challenge This Week..

This week it’s Navy’s Bill, battling it out with South Dakota State’s Jack Rabbit. Currently, standings on the scoreboard reads that Sebastian the Ibis leads in the votes, followed by Bearcat and Jack Rabbit. Personally, we’re partial to the mascots that have talked to Stories Behind the Fur soooo GO Super Frog and Big Red, in no particular order!
As they say in Chicago, vote early, vote often.

Go Human Beings!

For the next few days, Hulu still has the Community episode, titled Football, Feminism and You, where the dean of the school has changed the mascot from the Grizzlies to the Human Beings. The story line enfolds involving Chevy Chase’s character helping and sharing his knowledge of marketing and branding, icon development and Y2K preparedness to help develop the Human Being mascot. Very funny and quite a reveal of what the mascot turns out wearing to the Friday night game. Check it out before it goes away! Hulu Link

What’s wrong with your mascot?

from

RockMNation makes a very good point in a recent posting about mascots:

Pistol Pete, the mascot version, is super creepy. The Cowboy mascot is supposed to be a likeness to Frank Eaton, the real-life cowboy known as Pistol Pete. There’s just one problem. When it comes to mascots you got to go full-on caricature or not go at all. Okie St. ended up with a regular-sized guy, a super gigantic head and way too realistic facial features. It makes for a terrifying combination. There’s a lot of pain behind those enormous eyes.

IT IS SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT… BIG HINT TO WILLIAM AND MARY!

Friendly (Mascot) Rivalry

The Charleston Daily Mail reported Friday of the childhood friends that became mascots. They have known each other since kindergarden and graduated from Point Pleasant High School where they were voted most active students for the yearbook. So sweet, it reminds one of the story of The Fox and the Hound! Rebecca Durst, West Virginia’s second female mountaineer and Trey Barker, Marshall University’s Marco talk about how they work when the school’s go head to head in a matchup.
Although the Mountaineers won 24-7, the team’s quarterback, Jarrett Brown, was hit on what looks to be a helmet to helmet collision with 2 defenders. As of Sunday, Brown didn’t suit up for practice and it is questionable if he will play against UConn next weekend

Happy Birthday

Phil Masturzo/Akron Beacon Journal)

Phil Masturzo/Akron Beacon Journal)

Ohio.com and Beacon Journal writer Bill Lilley posted what looks to be a 90th birthday celebration today for Richard Hansford who has many accomplishments to his name, but his proudest (and most important to Stories Behind the Fur) is the creation of the mascot Zippy the Kangaroo! (the Kangaroo being 60 years young).
