Normal Baseball announces they are the Cornbelters!

Cornbelters it is. After all the media circus that was the online voting process for a team name. Suggestions and majority lost to the chosen name of Cornbelters. So long to the great suggestions of Nutz, Coalbears and Camelbacks. Instead the new addition to the Frontier League look forward to a marketing frenzy, with a proud logo and corn related concessions including corn chips, sweet corn and corndogs. Reminds one a little of the movie Better off Dead with a meal of French Toast, French Fries and French dressing catered to the French Exchange Student!

Bury me in College Station?

Who else but Texas Aggies,  would bury their dog mascots known as Reveille, so that the deceased can see the football score inside the stadium? and now they have a place for alumni to rest as well.

The new Memorial Cemetery of College Station, is  set to open in a few weeks, with plans for burials beginning in mid July.  The new cemetery has reserved a special section for Aggies and their supporters who want to be close—forever—to the sprawling campus and be with like-minded Aggies after they die.

A few of the nation’s universities—Notre Dame, Iowa State, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and Virginia among them—have had school-affiliated cemeteries for nearly two centuries, but this one is believed to be unique in Texas.

The first phase will have 2,900 burial spaces, although non-Aggies are welcome there,

Eventually the cemetery plans to expand to  57-acres, with roughly one-third of it dedicated to A&M. The school has no financial stake in the $10 million project, but is allowing the city to use the school logo.  350 spaces have already been solld, even though you have to fork over  an extra $1,050 to get planted in the Aggie part.  IS THAT WHERE YOU INSERT THE JOKE?

A change for “the Don”

De Anza College Associated Student Body Senate wishes to change the college mascot but participation and interest are low in replacing “the Don”. The May 4 deadline has been extended since after months of promotion, the Senate has failed to collect enough applications (only 18) to conduct what they say is a legitimate contest. Although the athletics department is open to the change, an athletic representative felt that the push should have been done earlier. For Athletics, the cost means resurfacing the gym, changing uniforms and other signage at the school as well as new merchandising at the school. Interesting that even though the contest has been published and announced at school events, there is very little interest. I suppose the Don has called in his favors and wishes to stay “the Godfather”.
