Capital One/Big Red on a Road Trip

Ah, the road trip! Nothing can be sweeter.  Wind in your hair (or at least the idea of the miles passing by) and the romantic notion that this is the way to see the world.  The reality is that even adults want to know “if we’re there yet” and if you have kids, it’s the longest self imposed torture.  I’d love to hear from readers tell their stories and  top driving around 1500 miles from Chicago to Dallas in a ‘84 Mazda 626 on several trips to visit the family.  By the end of the return drive, we would all get home, head to an empty room and savor the space and quiet.

My brother and I would draw an imaginary line and conveniently beat the tar out of each other when “the line” was crossed.  One Christmas, we got an early presents of walkmans and mom said that was the best gift for all concerned since it was the quietist trip we had.

So what to do to pass the time and miles?  Count the birds on the fences and telephone lines, look at the cows, and stop for pecan logs, moon pies and dr.peppers.  Take a look at what’s been going on in the Capital One RV lately.  Big Red seems to be entertaining the masses of mascots.

A Mascot Cake

photo c/o The Signal

Just down the street from me is the College of the Canyons, whose culinary students won first prize at the Sweet Charity Cake Auction, created to raise money for the Santa Clarita Valley Youth Project.

The cakes were auctioned and encouraged to be themed with other objects.  Naturally the  college’s new Institute for Culinary Education put the Cougar cake with cookbooks, while a free therapy session with Donald Goodman, LCSW was paired with his cake “Choclate Therapy”.  And, it would have been interesting to see the auto dealerships “Speed Bump” cake.

We’d love to post any pics of mascot cakes you’ve made.  Stories Behind the Fur has seen Longhorn Cakes before but a Big Red or Guiduck might TAKE THE CAKE!

Andy Staples at Sports Illustrated earlier this month listed the top fifteen high school team nicknames and the Cairo (Kay-roe) Syrupmakers are number one. Looks like it was a tough choice when competing against Imps, Peglegs, Poets, Atom Smashers and Nimrods!

The Return of Pro Hockey to the Twin Cities

It’s been awhile since the North Stars left town and now The Twin City Yeti of the new North East Professional Hockey League will be brawlin it out with a 44 game season.  Not many details were given to the mascot except he will be known as Eddie the Yeti and team colors of yellow and black.

Hope the Yeti don’t follow their predecessor’s lead and snowbird down to another southern state… One would hate to see the Santa Fe Yeti!

Waiting for School to Start…

As Stories Behind the Fur prepares for college season and mascot mayhem, news of mascots can be slim pickens in the summer months.

As we cheer the Australian mascots kicking rowdy fans back into the crowds, the Yeovil Town mascot in the United Kingdom, makes us feel as if America and college sports is the place for mascots to represent! The Somerset County Gazette is writing about a new promotion where one can pay to have their wee one go out on the pitch before the footy.  Don’t know if I would want to spend my birthday with this character!
