Andy Staples at Sports Illustrated earlier this month listed the top fifteen high school team nicknames and the Cairo (Kay-roe) Syrupmakers are number one. Looks like it was a tough choice when competing against Imps, Peglegs, Poets, Atom Smashers and Nimrods!

Mascot Race in Santa Rosa

Santa Rosa will have an annual all city track meet today, including a race for mascots.  Looks as if it will be a fair fight this year, after questions arose last year in footwear for one of the mascot competitors.  According to the Press Democrat on Tuesday,  Santa Rosa coach Doug Courtemarche stated that for this year’s competition, “They must run in full paws.”

Last year, a panther and cardinal mascot protested the Coyote wearing spiked shoes.  Who would think that a panther and a cardinal would ever team up on the same side! Link to Press Democrat

Saturday on the Slopes!

last race-lousy time!

last race-lousy time!

This movie requires Adobe Flash for playback.

We’ve seen Scotty the Scotty Dog race down the hill, AND, in the podcast interview found out that the costume was ONLY bearable and cool on that run, as well as the mask caught the wind and spun around 180 degrees for a bit!
First Tracks Online Ski Magazine has posted that in Mammoth Lakes, California, the second annual Roxy Mascot Challenge will be held during the Chicken Jam this Saturday with a $6000 prize purse.
Scotty, too bad you’re in the Eastern timezone and Stanford Tree needs to get his pine needles out to Mammoth!

A College Mascot Competition?

link_to_article

The San Marcos (Texas) High School this week is sponsoring a college week titled “Education, Go Get It”.

To get students fired up and interested in higher education, fight songs will be played between classes  and faculty and staff will be wearing college t-shirts and sweatshirts.  The week’s festivities include daily announcements about colleges, power point slide shows broadcast over the TVs,  information tables at lunch, and a college fair.

Of interest to Stories Behind the Fur, is the college mascot competition on Friday.   Students can dress up as a mascot from their favorite university, and win a prize!  We’d love to see pictures from that pageant!

Boston Globe Features Photospread of High School Mascots

“The head’s heavy. You can’t see a lot. You have to look up or down.”link_to_article

Kudos to the lovely photo article from the Boston Globe earlier this month.  Not only does it have some creative shots, it tells a little about those inside the suit from high schools in the area!

Sure an Aardvark can be menacing!

http://www.tampabay.com/news/humaninterest/article895953.ece

Here’s a story about a middle school that said it was being forced to ditch the Long Horn mascot and have it  replaced with an Aardvark.

Turns out it was a hoax but what will the least menacing mascot list look like if people keep making jokes like this and even retiring others!
