Benji Gray numero dos!
Apologies for not posting at the regular time last week. The paying job and short week got in the way!
Our talk with Benji Gray was so great and interesting in dealing with Mascot director and past experiences as Smokey and Davy Crockett, Stories Behind the Fur thought we’d let you hear the rest. Enjoy!
A winner will be chosen…
It’s a bonus podcast for Stories Behind the Fur! UCA Mascot Director Benji Gray gave some insight and tips about tonight’s Mascot Championship!
“Wooo, Pig! Sooie! Razorbacks!” Hog Callin Big Red

Link_to_Spirit_Squad_Info_&_Pics
John Marc Shellenberger is another Arkansas mascot that was willing to call out and let me know how being part of a Razorback team of mascots is all about. I was amazed at how fast he (and Nathan) responded to my interview request and he said they like doing it and what great info he passed on to Stories Behind the Fur.
Get ready to run with the Razorbacks this month!
This month is everything Arkansas Razorback. I dialed up Boss Hog (Nathan Allen) and (John Marc Shellenberger), two of the University of Arkansas mascots and learned a lot about the school’s mascot team consisting of Big Red, Sue E, Pork Chop, the newest member-Boss Hog and the live mascot (Russian boar) Tusk.
Nathan Allen (Boss Hog) told me of the hazards of an inflatable mascot and faulty wiring as well as the try-out process.
Most intriguing is that this mascot program announces and celebrates the people behind the scenes. There is no secrecy– I was allowed to use names, see pictures, and openly “expose” the fellows I spoke with.
Movement and vision always seems to be an issue for mascots and I can’t believe this video link of Boss Hog making a 3 pointer from his snout.
I could never make a three pointer as a high school basketball player and that was without an inflatable uniform…I had full vision and full use of my arms and still couldn’t!
Barking at Jacob Wilcock Carnegie Mellon’s Scotty
Jacob was kind enough to talk to Stories Behind the Fur, revealing who was under the Scotty Hood and helped open up the school’s mascot opportunity. This year will be the first year one can audition/tryout to be Scotty before it was just like out here in Hollywood–it was who ya know!!!
Jacob also gave insight into choosing a new mascot outfit. Many factors go into committee including mobility and visibility.
Jacob talks about the clip above. Which, when on your last college ski run, a choice outfit with limited visibility is probably not the wisest, but it is the most stylish!
