Monday is for Luv, Wednesday is for Hugs
At least hugs is on the agenda in Riverside, California and for UC Riverside’s mascot Scotty Highlander. He is hoping to call fans and friends from all over to help break a world record for most hugs in an hour.
At high noon this Wednesday, lots of people will line up near the bell tower and be wearing blue and gold (since Wednesdays are R’Day). This is not only a chance to be a part of history and record breaking but one does get the gift of a hug as well as a ”I Hugged Scotty!” sticker, and participants are eligible for other prizes.
Tonantzin Oseguera, assistant dean in Student Life, is “confident” that UC Riverside can beat the current Guinness World Record of 1,201 hugs in an hour. Rules are strict though. Two independent witnesses not affiliated with the University must sign sworn statements, and the mascot must stay in one place once the hugging has commenced, and the event must submit photos and videos.(can’t wait for those to post!)
Looks like Scotty Highlander is prepared from his facebook page and this record-breaking attempt is a great way to show school pride and kick off UCR’s homecoming celebration, Feb. 21-26. Events including a bonfire, a basketball game, a large concert, classes, a hike and reunions.
A Mascot Cake

photo c/o The Signal
Just down the street from me is the College of the Canyons, whose culinary students won first prize at the Sweet Charity Cake Auction, created to raise money for the Santa Clarita Valley Youth Project.
The cakes were auctioned and encouraged to be themed with other objects. Naturally the college’s new Institute for Culinary Education put the Cougar cake with cookbooks, while a free therapy session with Donald Goodman, LCSW was paired with his cake “Choclate Therapy”. And, it would have been interesting to see the auto dealerships “Speed Bump” cake.
We’d love to post any pics of mascot cakes you’ve made. Stories Behind the Fur has seen Longhorn Cakes before but a Big Red or Guiduck might TAKE THE CAKE!
A change for “the Don”
De Anza College Associated Student Body Senate wishes to change the college mascot but participation and interest are low in replacing “the Don”. The May 4 deadline has been extended since after months of promotion, the Senate has failed to collect enough applications (only 18) to conduct what they say is a legitimate contest. Although the athletics department is open to the change, an athletic representative felt that the push should have been done earlier. For Athletics, the cost means resurfacing the gym, changing uniforms and other signage at the school as well as new merchandising at the school. Interesting that even though the contest has been published and announced at school events, there is very little interest. I suppose the Don has called in his favors and wishes to stay “the Godfather”.
Going for the Guinness Book of World Records
An artist and eight marketing students at Fresno State will be going for establishing the record for largest college-mascot-shaped recycling container. (Very contrived yet specific–much like this blog!) The container will be unveiled at noon Saturday at Beiden Field, where the defending national champion Bulldog baseball team will face Hawaii in a doubleheader, starting at 2:05 p.m. Link to Pix at the Fresno Bee
Mascot Race in Santa Rosa
Santa Rosa will have an annual all city track meet today, including a race for mascots. Looks as if it will be a fair fight this year, after questions arose last year in footwear for one of the mascot competitors. According to the Press Democrat on Tuesday, Santa Rosa coach Doug Courtemarche stated that for this year’s competition, “They must run in full paws.”
Last year, a panther and cardinal mascot protested the Coyote wearing spiked shoes. Who would think that a panther and a cardinal would ever team up on the same side! Link to Press Democrat
