Branding 101

Talk about a big change!  The College of William and Mary went from years of not having a mascot to now creating a Visual Identity Committee to monitor and take inventory on all logos in use.  The Flat Head News reports that the goal is to consolidate as currently there are many marks and logos (official and unofficial) since they currently have 12 trademarked logos in use.
Although many students think different logos help one show school spirit in different ways, The College of WIlliam and Mary and its formed committees feel that cohesion on a visual identity is important. Susan Evans, the committee’s creative services chair, is quoted as saying, “Identity is one of those things where you only recognize it if it’s not done well,”.
Good Luck to them and I’m sorry I can’t say go (Asparagus) stalks!

Mascot pending for the Tribe

After all the headlines for William and Mary mascot search, we have yet to find out what the reveal will be. Looks as if the Tribe is going mascot-less through the end of the football season which may prove to be as lucky as when Rowdy was restricted at Texas Stadium. There was a victory this week with a win over UVA (26-14).

Mascot debate at College of William and Mary

The College of William and Mary’s online student paper, The Flat Hat has posted that President Taylor Reveley hopes to unite students in choosing a new mascot for the school.  While the tribe has been used recently, Bertel King writes that the phoenix has represented quite nicely in the past.  This reminds Stories Behind the Fur of Harry Potter and Dumbledore but if a collegiate entity can have a Griffon as a mascot, by all means a phoenix can represent!  We’d love to see the get up for that!

New Mascot, Great T-shirts!

College of William and Mary’s Board of Visitors Committee on Athletics met at the beginning of this month to discuss the possibility of a new mascot. The BOV Committee hopes to have an all inclusive search process but to keep to ten or so finalists.
College President Taylor Reveley said, “We want something people like, that’s fun, something we can put on a T-shirt.”
Stories Behind the Fur has the suggestion of our Harry Rabbit!
