Friendly (Mascot) Rivalry

The Charleston Daily Mail reported Friday of the childhood friends that became mascots. They have known each other since kindergarden and graduated from Point Pleasant High School where they were voted most active students for the yearbook. So sweet, it reminds one of the story of The Fox and the Hound! Rebecca Durst, West Virginia’s second female mountaineer and Trey Barker, Marshall University’s Marco talk about how they work when the school’s go head to head in a matchup.
Although the Mountaineers won 24-7, the team’s quarterback, Jarrett Brown, was hit on what looks to be a helmet to helmet collision with 2 defenders. As of Sunday, Brown didn’t suit up for practice and it is questionable if he will play against UConn next weekend

Nineteen years ago, West Virginia University chose its first female mountaineer and Saturday night, sophomore and nursing major Rebecca Durst of Point Pleasant was handed of the musket and buckskin costume.  Durst becomes West Virginia’s second female mascot in school history.  She was chosen after performing in a cheer off last Wednesday at a home game with DePaul.  The competition sounded tough since Durst, a nursing major, was in a cheer off with 3 other finalist including current mascot Michael Squires of Clarksburg.  Ms. Durst makes her official mountaineer debut April 18 at the Gold Blue Spring football game!
