Colbert named as new mascot.

Without ballot box stuffing or campaigning, and without a fuss like in Normal at the moment, TV comedian, Stephen Colbert is the namesake of the University of Wisconsin Lacrosse eagle mascot.  Out of 10,000 students faculty and staff,  around 3100 participated in an online vote to choose Colbert over Baldy, Edgar, Ernie, Screech and Talon.  Voting proceeded after the originally chosen name of “Eddie”, created trouble since it is trademarked as the National Rifle Association’s safety mascot.

So it looks as if Colbert will lead LaCrosse on to Victory!!!!

So we have to admit at Stories Behind the Fur of a little jealousy. This blog and sometimes podcast came about because a documentary seemed too difficult, But some Badger Fans and alumni have followed and dare to tell the story of student mascots at University of Wisconsin.

Other Mascot Bloggers…

Elgin Community College now has a few official bloggers on campus and of note the Stories Behind the Fur, SpartaCat, the school’s mascot is one of them.  Unfortunately SpartaCat has yet to really post much.  Guess the cat is no threat to the University of Wisconsin Parkside’s Rangerbear, a Mascot of Mystery.

Champs Sports Bowl a whole lotta nothing!

Even though Florida State has permission and blessings from the Seminole tribe to use imagery for its mascot, writers pointed out that University of Wisconsin has a policy that discourages playing teams/schools with Native American mascots.  Didn’t matter for the match up last Saturday at the Champs Sports Bowl where Wisconsin didn’t officially schedule the game and the badgers came in and showed a horrible offense against FSU.  To highlight how bad it got, with 11:04 left, the Seminole fans decided to tease and taunt the few Florida fans that were wearing orange t-shirts rather than pay attention to the kickoff!

Florida State football ends the season with the most wins since 2004!  I guess the only way to celebrate a great season and a boot stomping bowl game is to focus on picking on your arch rival fans!

And Wisconsin has looked in to streamlining the policy to look more like the NCAA’s mascot policy.

UW Oshkosh’s Mascot gets a Promotion

http://www.advancetitan.com/?se=Lighter+Side&s=7201

As part of Halloween Hijinks the school paper has put mock articles in it’s issue.  Oshkosh’s mascot, The Titan, has replaced Superman for the top position in the  Justice League.

Once again, proving that mascots are a force to be reckoned with…
